“Hawksmoor & Vanbrugh: The Drama of Architecture:” A talk by Sir Charles Saumarez Smith
Thursday 19th March, 6:30 pm to 8 pm
Hanbury Hall, London
Join Sir Charles Saumarez Smith for a fascinating exploration of the creative partnership between Sir John Vanbrugh and Nicholas Hawksmoor, two of the most original and dramatic architects of early 18th-century Britain.
This richly illustrated lecture examines how Vanbrugh’s background in theatre shaped his bold architectural vision, and how Hawksmoor’s powerful interpretations of classical forms gave rise to some of the most striking buildings of the English Baroque. Together, they created architecture of spectacle and grandeur, buildings that still dominate the landscape today.
Drawing on his deep expertise in architectural and cultural history, Sir Charles offers fresh insights into the imagination, ambition and collaborative energy that defined their work, revealing how drama became embedded in stone.
A compelling event for anyone interested in architecture, history, theatre, or the cultural life of Georgian Britain.
