Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Vanbrugh 300 is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to develop a nationwide project that aims to broaden the awareness of Vanbrugh through special displays, free education programmes and lectures, throughout his tercentenary year in 2026.
In The Footsteps of Vanbrugh
In this VANBRUGH300 lecture presented by the Traditional Architecture Group, architect Francis Terry examines the enduring influence of Sir John Vanbrugh on his own architectural practice. Drawing on recent projects including the new Tapestry Drawing Room at Castle Howard and a house on the Blenheim Estate, Terry reflects on the experience of working within landscapes and buildings shaped by Vanbrugh’s vision. The talk also explores the inspiration he has drawn from Vanbrugh’s Temple of the Four Winds, his study of Vanbrugh’s contribution to Stowe House, and the ways in which the architect’s legacy continues to inform contemporary design, with a particular focus on the restoration and recreation of the Tapestry Drawing Room at Castle Howard.
