Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Vanbrugh 300 is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to develop a nationwide project that aims to broaden the awareness of Vanbrugh through special displays, free education programmes and lectures, throughout his tercentenary year in 2026.
Happy World Architecture Day!
This VANBRUGH300 newsletter marks World Architecture Day by celebrating Vanbrugh’s enduring architectural legacy and looking ahead to the final events of the year-long celebrations. It features a new video recording of the sold-out Vanbrugh300 celebration with the National Portrait Gallery, including performances by Dame Harriet Walter and Stephen Boxer of the correspondence between Vanbrugh and Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, alongside a lecture by Ophelia Field on the Kit-Cat Club.
The newsletter highlights a series of forthcoming October events, including lectures on Vanbrugh and the Queen’s Theatre in the Haymarket, his role in shaping Stowe, his life and character, and the interiors of his houses. It also looks back at the final Vanbrugh300 weekend at Kimbolton Castle, which included activities for Brownies, a public open day and a special display exploring Vanbrugh’s relationship with Charles Montagu. Finally, it introduces a new article by Dr Frances Sands, Vanbrugh’s Reception: The First Century, examining how Vanbrugh’s work and reputation evolved in the century following his death, and encourages readers to explore the remaining VANBRUGH300 events and activities.
